So, Surrey want us to Drive Smart - not much wrong with that you might say, however
as usual they are missing a trick.
Speed is one issue they are campaigning about, saying it's selfish to drive too fast. They quote that "Speeding is an epidemic" and "Breaking the speed limit or going too fast for conditions were contributory factors in more than a quarter of fatal crashes (26%)".
How about this - it's also selfish to drive too slowly for the road conditions, holding up a long stream of traffic. Why don't they encourage these people to either drive at an appropriate speed, or pull over to let the faster traffic past? No, they want to concentrate on what can be easily measured and prosecuted, often by asking drivers to incriminate themselves, under the threat of a stiffer penalty if they don't. Now that's selfish too. |
